If someone gives you a precise average IQ in Poland, ask what was actually measured before accepting it. Poland has no official census of IQ scores. Poland does have high-quality, transparent education data. In PISA 2022, 6,011 students in 240 schools represented about 341,600 Polish 15-year-olds. What is the average IQ in Poland?

The scientifically careful answer is not known as one official number. Those are strong education outcomes, but they should remain PISA outcomes. PISA’s scales, age range, and sampling design are different from an IQ test’s norms and subtests. The fact that Poland scored above the OECD average in all three domains does not entitle anyone to infer a particular national IQ.

Why did Poland’s 2022 results fall from 2018?

The OECD reports that average results were down in mathematics, reading, and science compared with 2018, with 2022 among Poland’s lowest PISA results in all three subjects. How much does socioeconomic background matter in Poland?

A lot. In PISA 2022, the most advantaged quarter of Polish students outperformed the least advantaged quarter by 96 mathematics points. Socioeconomic status accounted for 16% of the variation in mathematics performance, slightly above the OECD average of 15%.

The result is not deterministic. Nine percent of disadvantaged Polish students still reached the top quarter of mathematics performance within Poland. That “academic resilience” is a reminder that group averages describe probabilities and resources, not a ceiling for an individual child.

Can PISA scores be converted into a Polish IQ average?
